For adventure seekers and nature lovers, Mount Azhdahak in Armenia is an irresistible destination. Standing tall at 3,597 meters, it is the highest peak of the Gegham mountain range, offering breathtaking views and a unique experience for those who make the journey. In the summer months, the slopes of Mount Azhdahak are accessible by all-terrain vehicles, allowing you to navigate the rugged landscape with ease. However, if you visit during winter, the journey becomes a bit more challenging, as you’ll need to trek on foot along the left side of the Azat River.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Azhdahak is its rich history, visible through the many ancient petroglyphs that adorn its slopes. These carvings, dating back to the 4th and 5th millennia BC, depict various animals, including fish and mythical dragon-like creatures, offering a glimpse into the distant past and the cultures that once thrived in this region. The hike to the summit of Azhdahak, including both ascent and descent, typically takes around 6 to 8 hours for those with an average fitness level. The trail winds through beautiful landscapes, revealing incredible views at every turn. Upon reaching the crater, you’ll be rewarded with the sight of the stunning crater lake, which adds to the mountain's mystique. For the best views of Azhdahak, head to the nearby peak of Karmirkatar, known for its distinct red hue. Both Karmirkatar and Azhdahak boast crater lakes, with Azhdahak’s lake being particularly enchanting as it changes colors several times within a minute. On a clear day, from the top of Azhdahak, you can marvel at the expansive views of Lake Sevan, Lake Akna, Lake Vanki, and even spot the majestic peaks of Hatis, Ara, and Aragats in the distance.
