Truso Travertines

Truso Travertines Natural Monument, located in the stunning Truso Valley of the Khevi region, is a hidden gem in the northeastern part of Georgia. Nestled between the majestic Greater Caucasus and Khokhi mountain ranges, this natural wonder extends from Truso Pass to the picturesque village of Kobi. To reach Truso Travertines, start your journey along the renowned Georgian Military Highway. Keep an eye out for the signboard indicating the turn to Kobi village. Follow the gravel road, and soon you'll find yourself at the entrance of Truso Canyon.
As you venture further, the Truso Valley reveals itself, showcasing a mesmerizing lunar-like landscape adorned with colorful mineral springs and deposits.
The Truso Valley stretches over 25 kilometers and sits at an altitude of 2093-2200 meters, offering breathtaking views of rich mineral waters. The valley's travertines are formed as carbonate minerals precipitate from ambient temperature water, creating stunning limestone formations. Some areas of the travertines are covered with a thin layer of transparent water on white slopes, highlighting the ongoing geological processes. This area is part of the Kazbegi Protected Areas, featuring sub-alpine and alpine meadows. However, most villages in the Truso Valley are now abandoned, adding a sense of mystique to the landscape.
The nearest settlement is just 2 kilometers away, inhabited only during the summer months. Historically known as Dvaleti, Truso Valley is home to several attractions, including the Abano mineral lake, the ruins of the 17th-18th-century ZakaGori Fortress, Truso Nunnery, and the 19th-century Church of the Assumption.
From the village of Kobi, a gravel road leads to the villages of Keterisi and Abano in Kazbegi Municipality. It's a 30-minute drive covering 12 kilometers to the natural monument. The distance from Keterisi to Truso Travertines is just 2 kilometers, taking about 10 minutes by car.
The beauty of Truso Travertines and the serene Truso Valley is worth discovering, this is where nature and history come together to create an unforgettable travel experience.
